Притяжательные местоимения обозначают принадлежность или связь каких-либо предметов.

Притяжательные местоимения английского языка имеют две формы: зависимую и независимую.
Зависимые притяжательные местоимения (my, your, his, her, our, their) всегда используются только вместе с соответствующим существительным:
My sister is 5 years old.
Моей сестре 5 лет.
а независимая форма (абсолютная) (mine, yours, his, hers, ours, yours, theirs) употребляется без существительного:
This is my book and that is hers . Это – моя книга, а это – её.
Местоимение в зависимой форме всегда стоит перед существительным. Если существительное стоит вместе с прилагательным(-и), то притяжательное местоимение ставится перед ними:
My new beautiful dress is the best. Моё новое красивое платье – лучшее.
Притяжательные местоимения в английском языке часто употребляются там, где в русском они отсутствуют, но подразумеваются:
I washed my hands . Я вымыл руки.
He usually goes shopping with his mum . Он обычно ходит за покупками с мамой.
В английском языке каждый моет свои руки, поэтому притяжательные местоимения в значении «свой» привязаны к личным местоимениям. Например, если на месте подлежащего стоит I , то употребляем my , если they , то their : I want to tell you my story . Я хочу рассказать вам свою историю. He took his book . Он взял свою книгу . She looks nice in her dress. Она хорошо выглядит в своем платье.

Как вы уже знаете, несмотря на то, что притяжательные местоимения (Possessive Pronouns) имеют две формы, отвечают все они на один и тот же вопрос => whose? То есть Чей? Чья? Чье? Чьи? При этом хотим напомнить, что абсолютная форма притяжательных местоимений отличается от первой (атрибутивной) как по правописанию, так и по роли в предложении: после абсолютной формы существительные не следуют , они отсутствуют.
Примеры :
That is his cup => Это его чашка (притяжательное местоимение в атрибутивной форме his + существительное cup )
Но! That cup is mine => Эта чашка – моя (притяжательное местоимение в абсолютной форме mine, после которого не нужно ставить существительное).

Обратите внимание! В этих предложениях притяжательные местоимения можно менять местами. Например, в последнем предложении Possessive Pronouns можно поменять местами без ущерба для контекста. А вот, например, в третьем предложении выбор будет только один, поскольку есть слово-идентификатор they.
